Dashain
is Nepal’s longest and most significant Hindu festival, spanning 15 days. It celebrates the triumph of good over evil by honoring Goddess Durga. Families reunite, wear new clothes, fly kites, and visit elders to receive tika (a mix of red vermilion, yogurt, and rice) and jamara (sacred barley grass).
The festival escalates through several important days:
Day 1: Ghatasthapana – Marks the beginning. Households sow barley and maize seeds in a clay pot to grow the sacred yellow jamara grass.
Day 7: Phulpati – A major event where holy flowers, leaves, and fruits are brought into homes.
Day 8 & 9: Maha Astami & Maha Nawami – Dedicated to Goddess Kali and Goddess Durga. Devotees visit temples and perform animal or vegetable sacrifices to seek divine blessings.
Day 10: Vijaya Dashami – The most important day. Relatives and friends gather to receive blessings, tika, and jamara from elders, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune
Tihar
Tihar is Nepal’s vibrant, five-day festival of lights and flowers, celebrating the deep bonds between humans, deities, and animals. Falling in late autumn, it honors Goddess Laxmi for prosperity and features heartwarming daily worship of crows, dogs, cows, and oxen, culminating in a celebration of sibling relationships.
The Five Days of Tihar
Each day of the festival
Day 1 (Kaag Tihar): Crows are worshiped and fed, revered as messengers of Yama (the god of death).
Day 2 (Kukur Tihar): Dogs are treated like royalty! They are adorned with marigold garlands and blessed with tika to thank them for their loyalty.
Day 3 (Gai Tihar & Laxmi Puja): Cows are honored in the morning as symbols of wealth. In the evening, families light up their homes with oil lamps (diyos) and create colorful rangoli patterns to welcome Goddess Laxmi.
Day 4 (Goru Tihar / Mha Puja): Oxen are worshiped for their agricultural importance. The indigenous Newar community also celebrates Mha Puja (the worship of one’s own soul).
Day 5 (Bhai Tika): Sisters put a special multi-colored tika on their brothers’ foreheads, pray for their longevity, and exchange gifts and sweets
Holi in Nepal
